The debuting Kona extends Hyundai’s lineup into the subcompact crossover segment, a busy class for 2018 that also features relatively new models from Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Kia, Buick, and Jeep. Its front end may remind you of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s, which provoked strong but divided opinions, and the Kona offers unmatched technology in its top trim and the best warranty in the business across the lineup. Our reviewer didn’t love the interior and wanted more cargo room.

The base engine for the Kona is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that makes 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque and uses a 6-speed automatic. A 1.6-liter turbo inline four with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft uses a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a battery-electric version with a 250-mile range is expected to join the lineup later this year. Our reviewer tested the turbo engine in an Ultimate Kona and enjoyed its midrange acceleration and handling, but he wished more tech was available to lower trims.
