Research shows that diabetes cases could more than double to 1.3 billion in less than three decades. To combat higher levels of blood sugar, some diabetics need to take regular injections of insulin – but this can be disruptive to daily life.

Emma Keeling is in Switzerland to meet scientists at ETH Zurich who have developed a fuel cell that looks like a tea bag, which can be inserted under your skin to generate electricity in the presence of excess blood sugar. A capsule of artificial beta cells which release insulin when they are electrically stimulated is attached to the fuel cell, providing a flow of insulin regulated by patients' own blood suger levels.
