On October 16, 2011, Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died after his car was involved in a fiery pileup with 15 other vehicles during a race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The president of the speedway, Chris Powell, argued during an interview following the crash that the track met all safety regulations and that the incident was "unfortunate."
