US and Philippines Open New Naval Base in Batanes Island

The US and the Philippines are opening a new naval base in Batanes Island, which is located less than 200km (124 miles) from Taiwan. The port is being built with US funding and is aimed at accommodating fleeing Filipino workers in Taiwan in the event of a crisis. The US military will send a delegation to Batanes next month to discuss the construction and funding of the new facility

The port could be an alternative to the existing one on the island's western side and would align with the country's efforts to bolster its defensive capacity near Taiwan
