After 10 years and over 20 movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the world’s most popular franchises. For actors, becoming a part of the MCU is a path towards career success. From Robert Downey Jr. to Chris Pratt to Michelle Pfeiffer, an eclectic mix of actors have become part of Marvel’s orbit. Yet, Marvel Studios and its parent company, Disney, maintain a great deal of control over its actors. In this video we’ll review the many rules that MCU actors have to follow. We’ll start at the more reasonable end of the spectrum. It won’t come as a surprise that the actors are sworn to secrecy about their films, must attend promotional events, and submit to background checks. MCU actors must also agree to have their likenesses used on merchandise, adhere to strict diet and fitness regimens, and maintain a squeaky clean public image. They also can’t spend their downtime acting in a DC movie, probably. The actors’ strict contracts also lock them into some challenging requirements. They can’t sign on for just a single film, are required to shoot cameos when they’re asked, and must drop everything to participate in reshoots. The most ridiculous requirements for MCU actors are the restrictions on their creative input. And for the actors who don’t fall into that trap, they’ll still get spirited away to secret locations and be given fake scripts. In other words, there are a lot of written and unwritten rules that MCU actors need to adhere to. Let’s look at them in detail.
