Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been criticised after appointing an advisor who once said that 'codger' pensioners were part of 'an under-taxed generation'.

Sir Edward Troop, a former head of HMRC, said in 2019 that baby boomers such as himself 'have had it ridiculously good' and should cough up more now.

Since his remarks, income tax thresholds have been repeatedly frozen. Around 650,000 lower income pensioners will be dragged into paying income tax as a result.

And this week, it was revealed that almost half a million OAPs are raiding pension pots early to cope with surging remortgage rates.
