There's no law against opening the matzah box, it's just not a good idea since there's so much chametz around. According to the letter of the law, matzah can be eaten up until the day before Pesach, and is forbidden on the eve of Pesach in order to keep up an appetite for it. Some have the custom to extend this prohibition for two weeks or thirty days before, or even from Sukkos.
