The MX-5 is one of the best cars to drive currently on sale, but does the added weight of the retractable hard top on the RF detract from the experience?

Let’s start with the numbers. The RF is only 50kg heavier than the soft top MX-5, which is impressive given that mechanical folding roof mechanisms can be seriously heavy. Our test car is the GT Sport Tech, meaning its gets a slightly stiffer suspension set up as well as sporty BBS wheels. We're also trying out the more powerful 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G model, which produces 182hp - 20hp more than the 1.5-litre model we tried earlier this year. So it is really worth the £2,000 premium over the soft-top Miata?
