The trade war between the US and China has rage longer than WW2 – a good 5-6 years. Chartr released a similar chart like this yesterday and inspired me to do the same, but with year-on-year monthly data so we get the latest prints.
The timing seems appropriate to post this. President Biden's recent short meeting with Xi Jiping subsequently led to him remarking later that Xi Jinping is a “dictator” and China is a country with “real economic difficulties”.
This hasn’t gone down well in Beijing, but at least the trade deficit is decreasing, although it also did during the pandemic and global financial crisis.
Any thoughts?
