Today we are featuring the recently up-dated Porsche Macan. The base model is a 2 litre in-line 4 engine giving a 0-62 time of 6.4 secs and a claimed top speed of 144mph. The engine produces 265hp from the engine shared from within the Audi group.

Pricing for the Macan starts at £50,800 and is simply badged ‘Macan’.

There have been some changes on the exterior side, a cleaning up of the front area perhaps the most noticeable, but the obvious change is to give the lower centre console a new touch screen similar to the Cayenne and Panamera. Of note is the car still requires you to insert a key before cranking the engine. In the other cars mentioned you only have to have the key on you.

In terms of rivals, our BMW X3 does better in terms of space, but can’t match the Macan for driving dynamics or interior quality. Porsche have nailed their production from a quality standpoint.

Possibly Jaguar's F-Pace provides the closest rival to the Macan though the Land Rover Velar comes close and adds that extra level of comfort. The closest F-Pace at this price level is the R Dynamic P250 AWD producing 250hp and it differentiates itself by offering substantially more cabin space but is marginally slower to 60mph at 6.9sec, does match the Porsche's top speed though. The F-Pace's drive really is on a par with the Macan though perhaps not quite as dynamically resolved as the Porsche when driving above nine tenths. On balance we still give our recommendation to the Porsche overall especially to the driver that values his driving experience above all else.

Any downsides, the real world performance is only so so. Buy the S if you want real performance and that 6 cylinder engine, worth it imo, and the lack of rear leg room could be an issue if you need to travel with four adults. But that's it, a true performance SUV and if you can only justify one car then this car come close to perfection for driving dynamics.
