The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award winner Justin Peck will choreograph the musical numbers in the film. Also leading the production are Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum and Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger.The film’s music team includes renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who will helm the recording of Bernstein’s iconic score; Academy Award-nominated composer and conductor David Newman who will be arranging the score for the new adaptation; Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori, who will be working with the cast on vocals; and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan, who will serve as executive music producer for the film.
The film stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler (who is making her feature film debut), as well as Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d'Arcy James, and Corey Stoll, among other actors. Rita Moreno, who appeared in the original film in 1961, plays a supporting role and serves as an executive producer. The film is dedicated to Spielberg's father Arnold, who passed away on August 25, 2020, the year in which the film was meant to be released.

The film was first developed by 20th Century Fox in 2014, and Kushner began writing the screenplay in 2017. Spielberg was hired in January 2018, and casting began in September. The dancing routines were choreographed by Justin Peck. Filming began in July of this year and ended two months later. There were shootings in both New York and New Jersey.

After being delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, West Side Story premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater in New York City on November 29, 2021, and will be released theatrically by 20th Century Studios in the United States on December 10, 2021.
