Risks and Prevention for the Agriculture Industry

Agriculture, while to those not in the industry may seem simplistic, it is actually among the more demanding and hazardous industries to be in. Those in agriculture face a multitude of health and safety risks. Additionally, agriculture is one of the few industries that can also put the whole family of the worker at risk while on the job.

Here’s some challenges and possible solutions for injuries in agriculture:
• The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that agricultural workers had a staggering non-fatal,
fall-related injury rate of 48.2 per 10,000 workers in 2011. There were also 167 fatal accidents due to falls in 2007 to 2011.

o To combat such incidents, operators are now being subjected to adapt new technology and stricter protocols regarding heavy machinery and working at heights.

• Agriculture features a relatively young workforce, some of which may be lacking in experience and training. In 2014, around 12,000 young farmers suffered a variety of injuries on the job. While allowing youths to man the farm can’t be avoided, their lack of experience may be compensated by training and awareness.

o To address this, those in agriculture should consider getting OSHA Outreach Training for general industry. Since many agriculture business is done in rural areas, consider taking it 100% online, around your schedule. This training could help manage hazards for your agricultural business.

Agricultural jobs can be repetitive, forceful, and prolonged, which adds another level of difficulty and danger for workers. Nevertheless, with thorough preparation and proactive training, there’s a greater chance that many hazards in agriculture can soon be controlled or eliminated.
