You have loads of compact/midsize crossover wagons from which to choose -- from the Toyota RAV4 to Honda's CR-V, Ford's Escape and more. The Mazda CX-5 is in this group, but unlike those three, you do not have a gasoline-electric hybrid option, nor does Mazda sell any version of the CX-5 with a plug -- full battery electric or plug-in hybrid.

The CX-5 has aged well, but the lack of a more energy efficient option is a real problem. This rig is quick and handles well, but it's also thirsty. Yes, the turbo four-banger is strong, but the 6-speed autobox is old-fashioned. The Mazda CX-50, with its new design language, is a more modern choice. And Mazda will launch a hybrid version of it using Toyota's technical assistance.
