What is Treat and Retreat? How does it work? And how did you develop it?

I originally called it Retreat and Treat because the focus is on the retreat. I developed it on the spot while in a tricky situation with a biting dog. I tossed some kibble over the dog’s head to lure the dog so it was further away. When it turned back to me, I tossed three pieces of higher value, freeze-dried kibble in front of him, so as he approached me, he was rewarded. But rather than let him get closer still, I tossed more kibble over his head to lure him away from me again. Then I tossed more liver treats to bring him a little closer.

By repeating this over and over, I was able to lure him closer and reward him for coming closer, without bringing him too close too quickly.

Eventually, I was just dropping treats on the floor by my feet. I dropped lots of treats and my hand always had more treats. Then I was able to lure the dog into a Sit, and then I would start taking a step back and having the dog come one step to me, and then Sit and take a treat.
