In the modern age of Facebook, Google, and smart devices, most of us are under twenty-four-hour surveillance. From the time we wake up using our phone’s alarm, to the dinner we eat based on a Google search, to the type of news we consume during our commute, data is being collected constantly on our everyday lives. These data points are gathered by large tech companies and are in turn sold, often times without our consent, and used by governments and businesses alike to influence our decisions. One only has to look to the Cambridge Analytica scandal for proof of this. Surveillance Capitalism is the term used to describe this new market which claims human experience as a free source of raw material for hidden commercial practice of extraction, prediction, and sales,’ as defined by Dr. Shoshanna Zuboff.

“At its core, surveillance capitalism is parasitic and self-referential. It revives Karl Marx’s old image of capitalism that feeds on labor, but with an unexpected turn. Instead of labor, surveillance capitalism feeds on every aspect of human experience,” writes Dr. Zuboff, the Charles Edward Wilson Professor Emerita at Harvard Business School as well as Faculty Associate at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Dr. Zuboff is also the author of the new book ‘The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power,’ where she argues that this new form of capitalism is a threat to free will, free markets, and democracy everywhere.
