It's very strange that a phrase like "Oh my God" would even creep into our daily speech in a culture that has become more secularized. Why is the name of God used as a colloquial term by those who don't respect Him? When you consider that 75% of Americans identify as Christians yet treat His name as worthless, there is a twofold irony at play.

The Ten Commandments are given to Moses in Exodus 20, which is where the concept of "taking the Lord's name in vain" first appears. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain," declares the third commandment (Exodus 20:7). What does this signify? What about phrases like "geez" and "OMG"?
Speaking disrespectfully or irreverently about God is taking the name of the Lord in vain. The cry "Oh my God!" has historically been seen by many as immoral as it has nothing to do with using God's name in a respectful or appropriate manner.
The same holds true for terms like gosh, which is a shortened version of God, or geez, which is the first syllable of Jesus' name. The term should not be used if contempt for God and His name is the intended intention. This subject is challenging since, on the other hand, some individuals use OMG without considering its association with God's name.
