Platform beds are one of the most common setups in vans because they make good use of a small space. They allow for a garage to securely store our mountain bikes and gear while sleeping. Although we already had a dinette and fold down (lower) bed in our van, we wanted a removable platform bed for this reason. The platform bed is a nice setup for the long trips without our motorcycles and when we have a ton of gear.
