Got standing water beneath the downspout or puddling on the lawn? Use a catch basin to capture the water and direct it away from the house for proper release downstream. Here’s what you need to know about this practical drainage solution.

SURVEY THE DRAINAGE PROBLEM
At this residence, the downspout was draining directly into the landscape and water was seeping into the foundation. A catch basin can capture the water and direct it away from the house through drain pipes.

BEFORE YOU DIG
Be sure you know what’s underneath the areas to be dug up. In most areas, call 811. You can also call the local utility to have them come out. Call cable, water/sewer/storm, gas, phone, and electric.

CATCH BASIN SIZES AND CONNECTIONS
NDS® catch basins are available in 9, 12, 18 and 24 inch sizes as well as a 6 in. round Spee-D® catch basin. Use adapters to connect the basin to a variety of pipe types and sizes.

WHAT YOU NEED
For particular installation:

12 in. catch basin & grate
Gravel
Shovel to dig the hole
Pick to dig the trench for drain pipe
Clear waterproof silicone
Drill with small drill bit
Drain pipe – we recommend smooth wall PVC

LAY OUT AND DIG THE TRENCH
Once we know where to install the catch basin and drain pipe we can start digging. The hole needs to be as wide as the top of the basin and 6 to 12 inches deeper than the basin.

Dig a trench from where the catch basin will be installed to your desired discharge point (permitted by your municipality). For proper drainage, the trench should allow the drain pipe to slope away from the basin at a minimum of 1% or 1 in. of fall for every 8 ft. of pipe. Carefully remove plants before digging—these can be replanted as the last step. You can rent a trenching machine to cut down on digging.

Create a watertight connection between the outlets and basin by applying a bead of clear waterproof silicone.

Drill weepholes at the bottom of the basin or use the weephole knockouts to prevent water from standing in the bottom of the basin.

Fill bottom of hole with 6 to 12 in. of gravel and set down catch basin. The top of the catch basin should be level with the ground next to the basin. Remove gravel to adjust accordingly.

CONNECT DRAIN PIPE
Next, connect drain pipe to the basin outlet for a soil-tight fit. Add silicone to make a waterproof connection, and glue each section of drain pipe together until you reach a spot where the water will drain. Use the NDS Swivel-Fit™ variable angle fitting to go around obstacles blocking the trench. Use a pop-up emitter at the end of the run to discharge water carried down from upstream.

Catch basin accessories help with basin performance. Filters help prevent more debris from entering and clogging the drain pipe than using a drain grate alone; risers add height to basin when the drain pipe runs deeper underground.

Catch basin atrium grates rise above the surface of the ground and are recommended for mulched beds, natural growth areas, & window wells. Decorative grates add an attractive look to the surrounding landscape.

FILL THE TRENCH
Backfill and compact the soil over the drain pipe and around the catch basin. Remove any dirt that may have fallen into the basin. Replant grass and other plants.

So there you have it. That may seem like a lot of digging, but the catch basin will protect your yard and home from future water damage.
