As we look to the future, there is much to consider in the way of facility design, workflow, access, comfort, the flow of information and the caregiver patient relationship. Growth and change are inevitable and healthcare environments must be flexible to adapt to the integration of new technologies, information systems and healthcare protocols. Now is the time to rethink and redefine workflow. At the core of Midmark is a new way of thinking about caregiver-patient interaction and the delivery of efficient patient care.
This guide contains the tools and solutions to consider when creating clinical work environments to effectively advance patient care and office efficiency. We'll start the tutorial by walking you through the various exam room designs from traditional, EMR transition, safe patient handling to dual access. Next, we'll show you various procedure room designs from a general procedures room to more specialized designs. We'll finish the tutorial exploring various vital signs workflows that will increase efficiency and improve care while complementing your office design.
The traditional exam room provides the foundation for a basic caregiver-patient workflow. For better access to the patient, the examination table is positioned at an angle providing unobstructed access from three sides. A lowered writing surface is placed adjacent to the storage zone, as is a chair for the initial patient interview. The overall exam room size is 10 feet by 10 feet with the entry door reverse hinged for patient privacy. Patient care is divided into separate zones for the patient interview and patient exam area. While this traditional setup allows for immediate patient care, historical patient data and any additional medical data that supports patient care is not immediately available in the room, so caregivers must leave the room to retrieve this information.
This exam room design also provides a public zone with side chairs for family and visitors as well as a dressing nook for patients. The patient care zone or private zone allows physicians access to equipment and supplies, and it includes space for the patient interview and a work surface to review paper records. The integration of technology into the exam space will improve the caregiver-patient interaction. Keeping the patient informed and engaged.
The next layout built on the traditional exam room to support advancements in technology and patient care. New technologies are critical to modern healthcare providing barrier-free access and EMR in the exam room gives real-time access to patient information at the point-of-care. Incorporating the computer as part of an efficient patient care environment gives the caregiver more direct contact with the patient and enables her to remain in the exam room to retrieve information from the EMR. The barrier free exam table allows the caregiver to adjust the table maintaining eye contact in a seated or standing position without undue back or neck strain. In this barrier-free layout the center of the room is kept open to allow a 60-inch wheel chair turning area and transfer of the patient to the exam table. The barrier-free exam table is fully accessible providing greater safety for patients and caregivers.
As healthcare evolves, one thing remains constant: the need for safe, efficient care.
