Recording a 3Dio microphone into your smartphone or tablet is possible with the proper equipment. Like most microphones, the output of the 3Dio microphone has a very quiet signal, called a mic level signal. In order for a smartphone to record this quiet signal, it needs to be converted to a digital format and it also needs to be boosted to a louder volume.

A device called an audio interface will convert the analog signal from the microphone into a digital format. Most audio interfaces also contain preamps that boost the signal to a louder volume. However, a special type of audio interface is needed that is compatible with a smartphone.

There are 5 things you'll need to record into your smartphone:
1) A smartphone
2) A 3Dio microphone
3) A smart phone compatible, battery-powered audio interface
4) Proper cables to connect the devices
5) A smartphone app

*Portable Audio Interface*
Many audio interfaces require power from a USB source so we recommend using a portable, self-powered audio interface. These devices are typically compact in size and designed to be used on-the-go. The option we are highlighting in this video is the iRig Pro Duo by IK Multimedia. The iRig is specifically designed to connect with a smartphone or tablet and comes with all the cables needed to connect to Apple or Android devices.

*Cables*
Due to the battery drain caused by using phantom power, we recommend only using the 3.5mm output of the 3Dio and power the 3Dio using the 9V battery inside the microphone. Because the signal from the 3Dio's 3.5mm output is unbalanced, we recommend using unbalanced cables as well. For the 3Dio FS series microphones, we recommend using a 3.5mm TRS to dual 1/4" TS cable to connect to the iRig Pro Duo.

*Smartphone App*
Once you've got all the devices connected using the proper cables, you'll need an app to process the audio and record to your smartphone. IK Multimedia offers a free recording app called 'iRig Recorder' that seamlessly integrates with the iRig Pro Duo. It also allows for simultaneous video & binaural audio recording.

1) Turn OFF the phantom power on the iRig Pro Duo. Always keep phantom power OFF when using the 3.5mm to dual 1/4" cable in order to save the battery life.
2) Plug the 3.5mm end of the splitter cable into the 3Dio mic.
3) Plug the 1/4" left splitter cable (usually black) into channel 1 of the iRig Pro Duo.
4) Plug the 1/4" right splitter cable (usually red) into channel 2 of the iRig Pro Duo.
5) Turn the 3Dio power to the 'ON' position.
6) Set the gain knobs for channels 1 & 2 to about 5 or 6 out of 10. Ensure they are both set to identical levels.
7) Connect the iRig Pro Duo with your smartphone or tablet device using the corresponding cable that came with.
8) Plug your headphones into the iRig Pro Duo.
9) Download the 'iRig Recorder' app from the App Store.
10) Launch the App and press the Record button. To record video and 3Dio binaural audio simultaneously, simply tap the camera icon to launch the video capture.
