Say, for example, that you have a crack in your ceiling and you notify your landlord of the issue, and they say that they will take care of it.

However, time goes by and the landlord either does not have the crack fixed, or they patch it up poorly without dealing with the underlying issue that is causing the crack. Because of this, the ceiling begins to leak and could cause a puddle that someone could slip in, or the entire roof could come down and injure someone.

Because the landlord was notified about the leak in the ceiling but did not fix it correctly, they would be legally responsible for any damages or injuries that were caused by the leak.
