In stressful situations, it can be hard to self-regulate our feelings. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage our physical, emotional, and mental reactions so that we can perform and behave more skillfully under stress.
Regaining our composure begins with awareness. When you feel ourselves slipping into a spiral of stress, shut the laptop and do something enjoyable, like taking a walk outside. This gives us a chance to be present, breathe, and reenter work with a calmer mindset.
