Oxygen saturation is one tool measured by a pulse oximeter that nurses and healthcare providers use to gather information about the respiratory system.

Measured as a percentage out of 100, O2 Sats are considered normal when 92% or higher in a healthy individual. In patients with lung disease, this may change. In particular, COPD patients may be managed at 88 to 92%

understanding the information obtained in a waveform gives us further insights into the patient's condition.

It is a reflection of the body's ability to ventilate (move oxygen in and out of the lungs) and perfusion (movement of oxygen into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide out of the bloodstream).

Patient preparation and education along with clinical considerations such as anemia, trauma, COPD, and Co2 are discussed.
