High performance, practicality and affordability are hard to achieve simultaneously. While it's debatable to some, I believe the mark 8 GTI checks those boxes, and the 40th anniversary edition sweetens the deal. In fact, this with a 6 speed would earn my general recommendation over the new Civic SI, Subaru WRX, GR Corolla and more.
