Cutter's Way is a relatively unknown 1980s film directed by Ivan Passer and stars Jeff Bridges and John Heard. It is one of my favorite movies and the best thriller you've probably never seen.
Similar to post-war, "sunshine" noirs like Chinatown and The Long Goodbye, Cutter's Way follows a pair of friends attempting to bring a murdering oil tycoon to justice. But the film's impact reaching far beyond its plot. There is a sense of timelessness that the film's "arthouse" sensibility captures through its themes and expertly crafted characters.
A great reason to watch this film is a career performance from John Heard, an actor of enormous talent whose career unfortunately never again reached the peak of Alex Cutter.
