Learn the step-by-step process for replacing your Social Security card.

Whether you prefer to apply online, by mail, or in-person option, there's no charge for the replacement.

The quickest method is creating a My Social Security account at ssa.gov, where, if you're 18 or older, have a U.S. mailing address, and reside in one of the eligible states, you can request a new card online.

Find out the alternative steps if you're in a different state or need a name change on the card, involving mailing an application or visiting a local Social Security office with a government-issued photo I.D., such as a driver's license or passport.

Your new card can come by mail within two weeks.
