In this short excerpt from our documentary "Kingdom of Kongo: Slaver Kings, Amazon Queens and the Brazilian Spartacus" we take a brief look at the Portuguese conquests in Morocco during the latter part of the 15th Century; the political crisis it caused within the Watassid dynasty, and eventual intervention of Ottoman forces that set up a puppet regime. When the rightful heir of Morocco approached Portugal for support, the resulting clash, known as the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, caused the death of Portugal's king, which led to a succession crisis, and ultimately a personal Union with Spain, that would last almost a century and lead to the near bankruptcy of Portugal, with the loss of virtually of its colonial empire. #history #portugal #morocco #battle #documentary #ottomanempire #ottomanbattle
