About Rescue:
The writing of “Rescue” started very late one night on an acoustic guitar, at a much slower
tempo and was heading in the direction of becoming a ballad. After writing a few verses and
battling to come up with any decent ideas for a chorus, I went to bed.
The next morning I plugged my electric guitar into my amp, cranked up the overdrive and
started playing a very rocky guitar riff. It took me about 5 minutes to realize I was playing in the
same key that I had started writing in the night before. I had this crazy idea to drastically up the
tempo of the song I had started writing the night before and see if there was any synergy
between the beginnings of that new song, and this “rocking” guitar riff. It worked! The prechorus
and chorus came together so quickly once the electric guitar was introduced and the
tempo of the song had changed. I knew right then and there that “Rescue” would be the
opening song of my EP.
Lyrically, the song is a call for a rescue. I fought many battles in the 18 months leading up to
this song. In life, it feels like things just don’t slow down. You kind of have to fight your battles
while trying to keep up with the pressures of life. Hence the lyrics in the first verse: “Can’t stop
now, I just keep running with my broken parts.” “No rest now, can’t keep up with my racing
heart.”
The pre-chorus is a call to be saved from all of these battles and recognizing that it can’t be
done alone. The chorus then deals with substances we as humans tend to use as coping
mechanisms to get through our battles and get through another day, but these substances
tend to numb the anxiety and pain for a short time only. Ultimately we need a lasting solution to
these pains and anxieties. There’s a recognition that we need to be rescued. As hard as we try
to rescue ourselves, the irony is that we can’t do it alone.
