Let me show you a simple way to stain wood with colored fabric dye! There's a wide range of colors you can choose from (and unlimited custom mixed options) and you can even thin it down for lighter and darker shades. From what I understand, it could possibly fade under lots of sunlight, so keep that in mind. You should be able to protect it with a wide range of clear top coats as well (poly, lacquer, etc) but it's always a good idea to test it out just to be sure.
