R2-KT may seem like any other droid, but she is so much more. This little astromech served the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars and supported General Leia Organa and the Resistance. But her origin story is what truly sets her apart. In 2004, Katie Johnson, daughter of the 501st Legion costuming group’s founder, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. As her health declined, she expressed her wish to have a droid by her side like R2-D2 was by Padme’s in the movies. The R2 Builders Club heard her story and created R2-KT for Katie, who was by her bedside during her final days.

Dave Filoni included R2-KT in The Clone Wars as a way to honor Katie’s memory, and in 2015, she appeared in The Force Awakens. R2-KT has visited children’s hospitals, spread awareness of pediatric illness by attending events, and raised millions of dollars for charity. The next time you see this pink astromech, remember her story and the hope and courage that lie at the heart of the Star Wars universe.
