What is the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park?

Proclamation 184 (August 27, 1937) created the Mahagnao Volcano National Park protected area originally covering 635 hectares. It was renamed the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park under the National Integrated Protected Areas System of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through Proclamation 1157 issued on February 3, 1998. It now just covers just 340.82 hectares. The protected area t straddles the boundary of the towns of Burauen and La Paz, Leyte. Characterized by lowland and mountain forests, it is located 860 meters above sea level. The volcano's last recorded eruption was in 1895.

the MVNP's iconic feature is its three lakes, namely: Lake Mahagnao, Lake Malagsum, Lake Matigbao. On its southern flank is Lake Malagsum, a crater lake known for its "green" acidic water and is a sanctuary to several species of ducks. Atop the mountain right next to Lake Malagsum is another but smaller lake, Matigbao, which is a home to many dragonflies and offers peace and quiet that is a precious commodity nowadays. Matigbao can be reached through an uphill trek through rough and forested terrain
