Christian Outreach in Action (COA) [https://www.coalongbeach.org] provides services helping families and individuals to get back on their feet and make progress toward a healthy and sustainable life. For the coronavirus outbreak, COA Long Beach seeks help in any form possible to continue serving meals, bags of food and diapers to those who need it most in our community.

This video provides simple instruction on how to drop off donated food items – plus verbal information on what items are needed most, and the various ways to contribute financially.

“We serve the most vulnerable members of our community on a daily basis,” said COA volunteer Keith Jajko. “While we had to suspend some services, we continue to serve meals and food with a few program changes. We will continue to feed the homeless, low-income and seniors until we run out of food or money, which we hope is not soon.

“Our clients were fighting to survive before COVID-19; now more than ever they need our help. And the whole Long Beach community should get involved to make it happen.”

Responding immediately to the pandemic, COA suspended its once-weekly clothing and household items drive; and its free legal clinic. COA’s thrift store at Clark Avenue and Atherton Street in Long Beach also was forced to close.

The prepared meals (daily) and food banks (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) continue, but all in a to-go manner. COA staff and volunteers take precautions, such as latex gloves and face masks, to hand out meals and food from a side gate at the 515 E. Third St. facility in downtown Long Beach.

It’s important to note that donated food from grocery stores has ceased, because they just don’t have excess food items to spare. At the very same time, the thrift store’s consistent revenue stopped when Clark & Atherton Mercantile was forced to close.

“It’s a perfect storm,” Keith said. “At the very time our clients need us most, our ability to deliver is hindered by the COVID-19 circumstances. There’s never been a more opportune time to help COA than now.”

COA is a registered nonprofit organization, which is based in a church property in downtown Long Beach; but operationally it is nondenominational, with a belief in faith-based teachings that tell us to provide compassionate assistance to those in need.

We are compelled by the need around us to feed people in need, provide spiritual support, help heal the sick ... and to ultimately teach them the skills necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency. To do this, COA depends almost entirely on private donations.

We have been blessed by the support from the community, in terms of donated food, clothing and other items, as well as sponsorships and corporate assistance.
