People took ocean liners mostly because it was the only way to get across the oceans of the world, not always for leisure. They were not cruise ships. And because of that, many ocean liner passengers had never been on the ocean and feared it greatly, so it became an important task to ocean line companies to design their ships to make you forget you were at sea.
