How do you MEASURE Stock Market Performance? Is My Portfolio DOWN 2%? Or am I UP 33%? What does the Profit & Loss Mean? Should I Use P&L or Total Returns? How are Dividends and Capital Gains Measured?

Markets have been rough the past few weeks so you may be anxious when you log in and see red LOSSES on your portfolio. But remember that the Profit & Loss (P&L) does NOT tell the whole story! Instead you should use TOTAL RETURNS to measure your performance! That’s because P&L only captures capital gains, it does not account for dividends and reinvested profits. I break down this distinction in detail, it’s an important lesson to learn! And I’ll reveal my TFSA portfolio and show how I’m not really “down” by 2%… I’m actually UP by 33% 😁
