In 2009, with America’s economy in shambles, Cash for Clunkers offered a lifeline by paying people to swap their used cars for new, fuel-efficient ones. There was just one catch: the trade-in would be crushed.

The federal program was supposed to lower national emissions and help the struggling auto industry. What it really accomplished was destroying 677,081 running and driving vehicles—including thousands of enthusiast gems, rare models, modern classics, and downright cool cars that would be crazy to scrap today.
