In our premiere episode of What’s New? We talk to Alysia Abbott (MFA Creative Writing ‘03), about her award-winning book Fairyland, A Memoir of My Father and the film adaptation, produced by Sofia Coppola, that debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Using a remarkable collection of her father’s writings, the memoir explores Alysia’s experience growing up in 1970’s San Francisco with a gay, single father. The memoir was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, winner of the ALA Stonewall Award and Madame Figaro Prix Heroine, and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards.

What's New? is an anthology series highlighting the accomplishments and stories of our greater New School community.
