What actually makes something American?

In 2018, that question is at the heart of America’s economic policy—buy American, hire American. But the answer, it turns out, is pretty complicated, especially when it comes to one of the most iconic of American products: Cars.

Quartz reporter Preeti Varathan traveled to rural Kentucky to understand what exactly makes a car American in the era of global trade. If “Made in America” is ultimately about supporting American workers, is it possible a foreign car could be the most American?
