Shorty can be bought on Amazon and the GoPro website. Let me know in the comments which side was smoother. 

Conclusion: shorty doesn't really help with the steadiness of the shot but it does give you a better grip and provides a small tripod. Overall I find it a very useful tool just for carrying around and filming time-lapses.
