Janyssa, 17, is an accomplished athlete and has received a scholarship to wrestle in college, a non-traditional sport for a female. Throughout Janyssa’s life, her parents let her fail so that she could see the consequences of her actions, which made a big impact on her. In her talk, Janyssa explains that all of her successes and failures were the result of intentional actions. While many are quick to blame others or make excuses, Janyssa explains that actions (and inactions) have consequences and by holding ourselves accountable and having a defined plan, we can overcome adversity and become stronger. Janyssa Berrios, 17, is a senior at JP McCaskey High School. She is involved in her high school as a certified peer mediator, a teacher’s assistant for a 2nd and 4th grade class at a local elementary school, a junior captain on the High School Varsity soccer team where she started as a freshman, a member of the wrestling team, and a member of the National Honors Society. During her junior and senior year of high school, she converted sports and became a female wrestler after playing soccer for 10 years. She enjoys poetry, music, yoga, heavy lifting, reading, spending time with her little brother, eating chocolate, and expanding her very interesting collection of panda collectibles as she is a big fan of pandas. Janyssa will be continuing her education at Gannon University as a member of the female wrestling team, member of the Honors program, majoring in Criminology, and getting certified for her personal training and nutritional license. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
