Lung-protective ventilation is a strategy to minimize stress and strain applied on the injured lung by using low tidal volumes and minimizing distending pressures. This strategy has been shown to decrease mortality rates in patients with ARDS and recent findings have also highlighted the role of other factors such as driving pressure and respiratory rate in causing ventilator-induced lung injury. Lung-protective ventilation is now recognized as the gold standard for all patients on ventilatory support, with the aim of mitigating VILI.

In ASV, clinicians only need to adjust a few parameters like %MinVol, PEEP, and FiO2. The ventilator takes care of everything else, including the important settings for preventing VILI.

But the big question is: Do the settings chosen by ASV align with the principles of lung-protective ventilation in ARDS patients? And how different are these settings compared to the standard-care approach? To get all the answers and learn about results of this recent study, check out this 15-minute video featuring Dr. Elias Baedorf Kassis.
