When we hear visual effects, CGI or VFX, our minds tend to wander to the wondrous world of magical animation and the replicated explosion of action movies like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, what about those subtle uses of CGI that we always overlook but can impact an entire film?

CGI and visual effects have come a long way since they were first introduced to Hollywood back in the 1950’s. In fact the first film to use CGI was Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958) in order to create patterns in the animation. When you compare that to the realism of today’s films it’s almost hard to believe. It’s hard to look past all the glitz and glam of the obvious visual effects in films like Twilight, Harry Potter, and Spider-Man, and see the effort that goes into the small details of a super suit or facial reconstruction.

Of course there are those movie moments that didn’t exactly benefit from CGI - we’re looking at you Chuckesmee - but we have the capacity to de-age an actor on screen without anyone noticing anymore! Ready to find out what visual effects you didn’t realize were incorporated in some of your favorite franchises? Or what they had to alter about Robert Downey Jr. to have him looking his best in Spider-Man: Homecoming?
