One view on whether to use 'I' in academic writing. By 'other writers' in this video, I mean books, journal articles, trade publications etc.

It's interesting to discuss with students the notion of the scholarly 'I' and the identity-work that developing this entails. In particular, they find it powerful to learn that that scholarly 'I' is present to the work, even when not foregrounded through use of the word. For example, if I place the word 'Significantly' at the start of the sentence, 'Foucault argued that we live in a culture of surveillance and control.' I suddenly become present in the text as an evaluative voice and that shifts my orientation to my work into another gear. Small change, big effect : )
