The recovery of the California Condor is one of the most impressive conservation stories in history. Though the species remains critically endangered, the population has recovered from an all-time low of 22 in the 1980s to over 500 today. Learn more about the dozens of remarkable partnerships that made this recovery possible, with zoos, researchers, hunting groups and other conservation organizations, and the general public all playing vital roles in returning North America’s largest bird to the skies of the Southwest.

This video was originally aired as part of our livestream of the 2022 condor release.

On 24 September 2022, five young California Condors unfolded their wings and took to the skies of northern Arizona for the first time in their lives! These five birds—three males and two females—were born in captive-breeding facilities in Oregon and Idaho and spent over a year and a half in human care before entering the wild. This release raised the wild Arizona-Utah condor population to 114 individuals! The entire event was livestreamed on The Peregrine Fund’s YouTube channel and featured four cameras, audience Q&A, pre-produced video segments, and interviews with our condor biologists.

Watch the entire livestream at    • 27th California Condor Release hosted...  , and mark your calendars for next year’s release on 23 September 2023!
