Manhattan at Large was a live televised show on public access Channel L hosted by various public servants highlighting issues around the city. It established an open dialogue between political figures, local organizations, community activists, and phone-in callers to discuss important topics and events that affected the lives of New Yorkers. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re sharing episodes hosted by former council member and activist Miriam Friedlander. In this episode from 1981, Miriam speaks with guests Ron Illardo of the Lower East Side Gay & Lesbian Neighbors, and Shirley Herman, Editor of WomaNews to discuss misconceptions, stereotypes, and violence against the Gay and Lesbian communities.
