Whilst Elon Musk’s SpaceX is pursuing some of humankind’s most challenging endeavours, a little-known aerospace company called Rocket Lab is quietly building a satellite launch and space systems empire. In this video we will unearth the secret behind Rocket Lab’s Electron workhorse and Neutron 2050 spacecraft and explore how Rocket Lab’s use of vertical integration will soon enable Low Earth Orbit domination. Since the inaugural flight, Rocket Lab has launched Electron a further 32 times carrying a variety of customer payloads including the NASA CAPSTONE CubeSat. As a result of Electron’s reliability and partial reusability it has become the second most frequently launched US rocket beaten only by the SpaceX Falcon 9.

Due to Neutron’s larger payload capacity of 13,000 kilograms and 5-meter fairing diameter Rocket Lab has hinted at a human rated Neutron variant designed to transport astronauts to the International Space Station and LEO, which may put Rocket Lab in direct competition with the SpaceX Dragon capsule and Starship spacecraft. Neutron will be constructed from light weight and high strength carbon composites using automated fibre placement. Although Carbon composites are ideal for orbital re-entry, they can be notoriously difficult to work with when constantly iterating on the design of the rocket. This is partly why SpaceX chose 304L stainless steel rather than carbon composites for Starship.

On March 16th , 2020, Rocket Lab acquired Sinclair Interplanetary. On October 21st , 2021, Rocket Lab acquired Advanced Solutions Incorporated. On November 15th , 2021, Rocket Lab acquired Planetary Systems Corporation. On January 22nd , 2022 Rocket Lab acquired SolAero Technologies. Rocket Lab aims to become a leader in end-to-end space systems. This involves assisting customers by designing their satellites and constellations, manufacturing the hardware and developing the software in-house, launching the product into orbit, and finally managing the customers payload when in orbit. With this vertically integrated supply chain Rocket Lab products will have short lead times, reduced cost, and enable the company to easily scale production. This benefits both small and large customers as most of the heavy lifting, pun intended, can be carried out by Rocket Lab.
