This is the first video game ever created. It’s called Pong and it was released in October of 1958. Since then, video games have been played by millions of people around the world but the economics of these games hasn’t changed much over the years … until now.

You can boil down the relationship between the game developer and the player into one simple equation… Time + Money = Fun.

For PC games, there’s an even more profitable business model for game devs. The free-to-play model gives you the game for free and includes microtransactions within the game. This model is even more devious because it tricks you into making many smaller transactions so you can get that dopamine hit over and over again. Do you want that cool-looking mount that all of your friends have? No problem, it’s only $12.50.
Do you want a chance to win some super rare items? It’ll only cost you a mere $1.99. But if you buy more, we’ll give you a discount!

These microtransactions are so small that you don’t really think twice about them but over time you could end up spending hundreds of dollars on a game and not even realize it.

And after you’ve spent all that time and money on a game, what do you have left to show for it? Nothing, because at the end of the day, the game developer didn’t really sell you those items, they actually licensed it to you. Which means you can’t sell them to anyone else.

But NFTs are about to change all of that. Today I’ll show you 5 NFT games you can play where you actually own the in-game items and you can trade or sell them whenever you want.

KotoWars is a battle game similar to Pokemon, where you can take your CryptoKitties and battle other players. As you progress in the game, you’ll earn cosmetic rewards for your cats as an ERC-721 token.

To play KokoWars you’ll need an existing cryptokitty. The game uses your cryptokitties genome to generate the attack and defense. But at the moment the game only uses 2 traits to determine the parameters of your cat. The Fur is responsible for Attack and Defense and the Accent color determines the element that the attack and defense have.

If they do this correctly, KotoWars could end up being extremely popular because it ties into the CryptoKitties ecosystem which is already very large and it appeals to the Pokemon card collectors as well because you can buy and sell these kitties.

Decentraland is a virtual reality universe similar to The Sims or Second Life. Players can buy, sell, and exchange ERC-721 tokens called LAND and use an ERC-20 token called MANA to purchase other in-universe items. Inside Decentraland, there are art shows, games, and specialized events users can participate in.

Sorare — With 100 soccer clubs officially licensed, Sorare lets you purchase NFTs that represent professional soccer players that can be used to play fantasy games against other collectors. This is kind of like a combination of NBA Top Shot and Fantasy Football.

Gods Unchained is the closest game I’ve seen to Magic the Gathering. The game was built by ex-Google and Riot Games engineers, funded by the largest gaming investor in the world, and led by the former Game Director of MTG Arena.

Gods Unchained uses a play-to-earn business model instead of the Free-to-play model. As you play the game and get higher ranks, you unlock more cards. Because all of the cards are NFTs, you retain ownership of them and you can sell them on the marketplace for real-world money or another cryptocurrency.

My crypto heroes is a multiplayer role-playing game where players level up their characters through battles and quests. You can be all types of heroes like Leonardo DaVinci, Napoleon, George Washington, and so many more.

Because blockchain games are fundamentally different from traditional games, the business model looks more like: Time + Fun = Money.

Players can now invest their time while enjoying the game and also create an open and free market where all of that hard work is rewarded with actual money.

What's one game you want to see switching to the Play to Earn model? Let me know in the comments.
