HOW THE DAY WAS MADE
One hundred years ago today, Anzac Day 1924, saw the unveiling of the Cross of Sacrifice and Stone of Remembrance in the Toowong Cemetery by the governor-general.
They were the first of their kind in Australia, so a national memorial to the WWI Anzacs.
To Canon Garland and the Anzac Day committee of Queensland, it was a milestone, paving the way to fund Anzac Square in the city, establishing beyond doubt the public’s desire to develop an Anzac memorial of substance in the city, and provide Canon Garland with added ammunition to see a unified observance and holiday in New Zealand and Australia.
It may surprise people to know that the development of an Anzac Square was a hot topic in the first unified council elections in 1925, driven by the interest the services held in the Toowong Cemetery 1924-25 were creating.
A CBD site was a contested idea; the former alderman of the Toowong Council, Walter Harding, fought a battle royale to have the square in Anzac Park Toowong.
So reflect on the ebb and tide and meaning of Anzac Day and the role Brisbane played in its development. Visit Canon Garland Place Toowong and reflect. Lest we forget.
