Making this video helped me realize something about Crawl Control that I wish I had known. Taylor, Hunter and I drove out into Capitol Forest near Olympia Washington to scout for cool spots to test our vehicles. We discovered a steep hill climb that was deeply trenched and I thought it be a great opportunity to test the Crawl Control feature on the 2023 Toyota Tundra. Toyota's A-TRAC system and Crawl Control system are both designed to improve the off-road capability of their 4-wheel-drive vehicles, but they operate in slightly different ways. A-TRAC uses the ABS system to control wheel spin and distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. It applies the brake to a wheel that loses traction while sending power to the wheel with better traction, ensuring the vehicle maintains traction and moves forward in challenging off-road conditions. Crawl Control does not directly improve traction by applying the brakes. Instead, it is designed to help the driver maintain a low, steady speed in extremely rough terrain by automatically modulating the throttle and brakes. The braking function in Crawl Control is used to slow down the vehicle when necessary, but it is not primarily used to control traction.
