The word D-Day describes in the military the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated. One of the best-known D-Day's was during World War II, on the 6th of June in 1944, also called Operation Neptune. Operation Neptune was the code name for the naval phase of the Allied Invasion of Normandy during the Second World War. The Normandy landings initiated the Western Allied effort to liberate western Europe from Nazi Germany and started off with the liberation of France.
