Today, almost every car in the Mercedes lineup can have four-wheel drive, but in the late 1980s and early 1990s it was pioneered in a car with a star. The Mercedes 300 TE 4Matic S124 was the first station wagon from the German brand that could be ordered with the 4Matic system. The basic idea was to improve traction on slippery pavement, and this was solved by attaching the front axle drive always on takeoff and whenever the ABS system records a skid, i.e. a difference in wheel spin. This made the car much more reliable to drive in winter conditions. It was a welcome sight wherever winter involved snowy roads, such as in Switzerland, where the originally presented unit came from. It is one of 12094 units produced.
